At Sankofa Institute, we are more than an organization; we embody a philosophy and way of life that prioritizes holistic living and recognizes the importance of our collective well-being. Our approach is rooted in the belief that true healing involves nurturing the mind, body, and spirit, and that recovery is a deeply personal journey requiring a comprehensive, integrative approach.
The Inspiration Behind Sankofa
Sankofa, a West African concept meaning “go back and fetch it,” underscores the importance of looking back to our roots, learning from our past, and using that knowledge to move forward. A bird with its head turned backward, retrieving an egg from its back, symbolizes this powerful idea, illustrating that it is never too late to return to our roots and reclaim what was lost or forgotten. Honoring our heritage and drawing strength from our cultural traditions can greatly support our healing and recovery.
The inspiration behind Sankofa Institute came from my own recovery journey and consulting work, which revealed a significant gap in services and education tailored to the experiences of people of African descent. Recognizing this gap, along with my travels throughout Ghana and South Africa, led me to establish Sankofa Institute to provide high-quality recovery education for communities of color and allies.
We also recognize the need to decolonize the way we approach recovery. The impact of colonization on Indigenous people, Africans, African Americans, and other people of color has been profound and lasting. One of the key impacts of colonization is the loss of traditional cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. Many Indigenous peoples were forcibly removed from their lands, separated from their families, and forbidden from practicing their traditional ceremonies and rituals. This loss of cultural identity has led to a sense of disconnection and alienation among Indigenous individuals, leading to high rates of mental health issues and substance use, among other challenges.
Our Commitment to Holistic Well-Being
We are dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey to recovery through a philosophy that honors the mind, body, and spirit. We believe in the power of holistic well-being and the importance of reconnecting with our cultural heritage and traditions. Holistic well-being is at the core of our philosophy, as we recognize that true healing involves nurturing the mind, body, and spirit, acknowledging their interconnected and interdependent nature.
We recognize the complexity of addressing substance use disorders and mental health, and we are committed to being a vital part of this broader effort. We focus on our strengths by providing exceptional courses and creating safe, supportive spaces for individuals in the recovery community. Through our dedicated efforts, we aim to make a meaningful impact by empowering those on the front lines while directly supporting those in need. In addition to crafting transformative learning experiences, we host several healing circles.
