Sankofa Africa
Safeguarding the Wellbeing of Future Generations
Sankofa Africa, an initiative of our nonprofit, creates community-led programs to support recovery from substance use disorder, trauma, and mental wellness within the African diaspora. We start with efforts in Ghana, South Africa, and Zambia, aiming to build strong coalitions that help communities heal and thrive together.
OUR FOCUS AREAS
SOUTH AFRICA RECOVERY PROJECT
South Africa faces a significant challenge with high rates of alcoholism and substance addiction. To address this, our South Africa Recovery Project focuses on community-led programs that provide high-quality education and training for future peer recovery coaches. These coaches will support individuals and families dealing with substance use issues.
Our flagship initiative is the Sankofa Recovery Health Coach Program, a 5-day immersive academy designed to prepare individuals to become highly effective recovery coaches. This program provides advanced coaching techniques, integrating best practices and innovative approaches to recovery support.
MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING
We are on a mission to transform the narrative around mental health and well-being within the African diaspora. Our commitment is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a mentally and emotionally healthy life, free from stigma and shame. We are building a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported on their journey to mental and emotional wellness.
In Ghana, South Africa, and Zambia, we are actively engaged in mental health and wellness initiatives that prioritize holistic wellbeing. We provide support and resources for individuals navigating their mental health journeys.
Food & Nutrition Security Initiative
As a community-led initiative, we aim to support local communities in South African in building resilience to address food and nutrition insecurities. Our key focus is assisting communities to establish community gardens and nutrition literacy activities to improve food and nutrition security.
We sponsor and support community gardens that enable communities to grow their own food organically, creating a self-sufficient agricultural system that benefits the environment. In addition, we engage in activities that promote nutrition literacy, equipping communities with the knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices.
