Sankofa Institute
for Collective Wellbeing
ABOUT US
Sankofa Institute is an African American woman-led 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, guided by Dr. Thulani DeMarsay, a person in long-term recovery. We are deeply commited to delivering high-quality, forward thinking, and transformative learning experiences and empowering the recovery community in Massachusetts and nationwide, with a particular focus on communities of color.
We recognize the complexity of addressing substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health, and we are committed to being a vital part of this broader effort. We focus on our strengths by providing exceptional courses and creating safe, supportive spaces for individuals in the recovery community. Through our dedicated efforts, we aim to make a meaningful impact by empowering those on the front lines while directly supporting those in need.
In addition to crafting transformative learning experiences, we host several healing circles, including The Sankofa Recovery Circles, Trauma Recovery Healing Circle and Healing Drum Circle. Across borders, we have developed Sankofa Africa, an initaitive of Sankofa, which creates community-led programs to support recovery from substance use disorder, trauma, and mental wellness within the African diaspora.
Guided by the philosophy of Ubuntu, which emphasizes interconnectedness, mutual respect, and shared humanity, Sankofa Institute transcends traditional approaches to recovery and healing. We acknowledge and address the unique challenges faced by people of color, offering culturally responsive and holistic approaches to well-being. Our programs and initiatives are deeply rooted in African indigenous wisdom, recognizing the transformative power of ancestral knowledge. By drawing upon this wisdom, we aim to foster resilience, empower individuals, and promote collective well-being.
We believe that personal transformation has the power to heal and empower others, creating a ripple effect of positive change in our communities and beyond. Join us on this journey of healing, transformation, and collective well-being as we nurture the roots of a brighter, healthier future for all.

Guided by Ubuntu
At the heart of our organization lies the timeless philosophy of Ubuntu, an African concept that emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity. “Ubuntu” — often translated as “I am because we are” — is not just a word but a guiding ethos that deeply informs our core values and philosophy. It teaches us that our individual identities and successes are inextricably linked to the wellbeing and progress of our community.
This principle of mutual respect and shared humanity is the cornerstone upon which the Sankofa Institute is built. It directs our approach to healing, learning, and community engagement, ensuring that every initiative we undertake is imbued with the spirit of empathy, solidarity, and collective empowerment.
