Last week, my colleague Octavia Hendricks and I had the privilege of delivering a presentation for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Our conversation centered on Ubuntu , a South African philosophy emphasizing our shared humanity. This principle is foundational to our work at Sankofa Institute for Collective Well-Being.
We believe that recovery and wellness are not individual pursuits, but shared journeys. Ubuntu teaches us that our well-being is bound together. Guided by this truth, we are building a global movement that centers collective healing, recovery, and transformation.
This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join us in expanding this vision.
Our Impact
Over the past year, we’ve continued to grow our reach and deepen our impact:
- Across the United States, we have trained peer recovery coaches, empowering leaders with the knowledge and tools to accompany others on their recovery journeys. Our programs integrate evidence-based coaching practices with Indigenous wisdom, helping participants bridge modern recovery models with time-honored traditions of community and care.
- Through our Global Community of Practice, we’ve created a space where peers from across the world can learn from one another, share best practices, and exchange wisdom rooted in lived experience.
- And through our Healing Circles, we continue to hold safe and supportive spaces for reflection, connection, and renewal.
Why Your Support Matters
Sankofa was born as a labor of love, created to fill a deep need for holistic, culturally grounded, and community-led approaches to recovery and well-being.
Your support makes this work possible. Your contribution helps us:
-
Provide scholarships for individuals from underrepresented communities
-
Expand our peer recovery and wellness coaching programs
-
Sustain our healing circles and community engagement work
-
Train the next generation of recovery and wellness leaders around the world
This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to help us carry this important work forward.
