Our daylong session provides recovery coaches and other peer support workers with a solid foundation for becoming trauma informed. This immersive learning experience explores the complexities of trauma and its impact on individuals in recovery. While coaches are not expected to be experts in trauma or attempt to bring a clinical lens to their work, cultivating a trauma-informed mindset will empower coaches to provide compassionate and effective support to recoverees. Participants explore the multifaceted nature of trauma, including racialized trauma and the emotional and psychological toll of past and present injustices. The session also provides a foundational understanding of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their effects on individuals’ lives. We explore how these impacts and traumatic stress increase the risk of substance use disorder, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Participants will be presented with research on how trauma exposure impacts specific regions of the brain, with an emphasis on the limbic system. Understanding trauma from a holistic perspective, encompassing biological, psychological, and social dimensions, will assist coaches and other peer workers in fostering a trauma-informed recovery culture. Participants will develop practical skills for trauma-informed coaching, including mindfulness techniques for managing potential activation, navigating transference, and maintaining healthy boundaries. By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with the confidence and insight to apply trauma-informed approaches in their coaching.
